Understanding DNS for Virtual Hosts and Parked Domains

The topic of this article is supported in its entirety by our customer support department.

It is important to note that when you add a virtual host (a second website hosted under your existing VDS account), or a parked domain (a second domain name that points to your existing main website), that these additional domains will also share the same set of email addresses and DNS records that you have created for your main website. For example, if you have created a DNS record called “office.yoursitedomain.com” which points to an in-house mail server, this same ‘office’ record will also be applied to any new domains you add—so office.yournewsitedomain.com will point to the same place. At this time, it is not possible to seperate DNS records between your hosted domains. Most users of the VDS Web Hosting system will not be affected by this automatic DNS alias setup, but problems could arise in situations where one domain name needs to point to an off-site mail server while other domains must be pointed elsewhere. Please keep this in mind when making any changes inside of the “DNS Records” section of the VDS Manager—all changes that you make will be applied to every domain hosted under your account.

These restrictions only apply to domains which are pointed to the Jumpline.com nameservers (ns.myhostcenter.com and ns2.myhostcenter.com). If your domain name is managed using off-site nameservers (such as a hosted DNS service provided by your third party domain registrar), then records for the domains hosted off site will be different than domains hosted on our nameservers.

If you have questions about the way that DNS records are shared among all of your domain names, please do not hesitate to contact our support department via support ticket at https://my.jumpline.com
